Short answer: a 5 GB travel eSIM covers a normal week in Turkey comfortably. Buy it before you fly and you also avoid the thing that catches travellers out here — Turkey's IMEI registration rule, which applies to local SIM cards, not to a roaming travel eSIM.
The IMEI rule, explained simply
Turkey registers phone hardware, not just SIM cards. Put a Turkish local SIM into a foreign phone and that handset is typically allowed on Turkish networks for a limited period — commonly around 120 days — after which it is blocked unless the phone is formally registered and a substantial fee is paid. That is pointless for a holiday.
A travel eSIM does not trigger this, because it connects as a roaming visitor rather than as a domestic subscriber. For a two-week trip, this alone is a good reason to skip the shop at the airport.

How much data do you need?
- Maps and messaging only — 1–2 GB a week.
- Normal travel use — 5 GB a week covers maps, WhatsApp, photos, translation and browsing.
- Working remotely or heavy social posting — 10–20 GB.
Turkey has good hotel and café Wi-Fi, so the plan is filling gaps rather than carrying everything.
Coverage across the country
Turkey's networks — Turkcell, Vodafone Türkiye and Türk Telekom — are strong, and 4G reaches well beyond the cities.
- Istanbul — excellent, including on the metro, the tram, the Marmaray tunnel and the Bosphorus ferries.
- Antalya, Izmir, Bodrum and the coast — strong everywhere tourists go; the occasional slow spot on a packed August beach.

- Eastern Anatolia and mountain roads — reliable in towns, patchy on the long stretches between them.

What to know about apps and sites in Turkey
Some services are restricted at network level in Turkey from time to time, and that applies to every connection in the country — local SIM, hotel Wi-Fi or travel eSIM alike. For most travellers the practical impact is small: messaging apps, maps, banking apps and booking sites work normally. If one specific site matters for your trip, check before you travel rather than assuming a different SIM would behave differently. It would not.
