Short answer: 3–5 GB covers a normal week in Spain. If Spain is the only country on the itinerary, buy a Spain plan; if you are crossing into Portugal, France or anywhere else in Europe, a regional Europe plan is usually cheaper than buying two.

How much data for a week in Spain?
- Maps and messaging — around 1 GB a week.
- Normal holiday use — 3–5 GB: navigation, WhatsApp, restaurant hunting, a few hundred photos shared.
- Remote work or daily video posting — 10 GB and up.
Wi-Fi is widespread in Spanish hotels, apartments, bars and cafés, and it carries most of the heavy use. Buy for the gaps.
Coverage by region
Movistar, Vodafone and Orange all run strong national networks, and Spain has one of Europe's better mobile build-outs.
- Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Bilbao — dense 4G, broad 5G, coverage on the metro.
- The AVE high-speed trains — generally usable, with drops in the tunnels on the Madrid–Barcelona and Madrid–Málaga lines.
- Costa del Sol, Costa Brava and the Balearics — strong along the coast and in the resort towns.
- The Canary Islands — well covered in the towns and along the main roads, thinner inside Teide National Park and on the mountain trails of La Palma and La Gomera.
- Rural Andalusia, Extremadura and the Pyrenees — fine in villages and on main roads, patchy on hiking routes.

Spain plan or Europe plan?
- Spain only, one to three weeks — a Spain plan is the cheapest option.
- Spain plus Portugal, France, Italy or anywhere else in Europe — a regional plan covering 30–40+ countries almost always beats two separate plans, and nothing needs switching when you cross a border.
- Spain plus Morocco — check carefully. Morocco is not part of European regional plans; that leg needs its own coverage.

- On landing, turn the line on and enable data roaming for that line only.

Practical Spain notes
- Small-town opening hours are real. If you are relying on a phone shop being open at 3pm in a village, it will not be. Another argument for sorting connectivity before you arrive.
- Restaurant bookings. Many good places take reservations only by phone or WhatsApp. A data-only eSIM plus WhatsApp handles the second; your home line handles the first.
- Airport transfers. Ride-hailing works in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Málaga but is restricted in some cities where taxis dominate. Having data means you can check which applies before you join a queue.
