Short answer: 5 GB is a sensible buy for a week in Egypt. Coverage is good in Cairo, along the Nile corridor and in the Red Sea resorts. Two things to know: local SIMs require passport registration, and internet calling apps are sometimes restricted at network level — which is true on any connection in the country.

- Alexandria and the Delta — strong throughout.
- Luxor and Aswan — good in both cities and at the main temple sites.
- Nile cruises — coverage comes and goes as the boat passes towns. Long agricultural stretches between Luxor and Aswan have weak or no signal, and boat Wi-Fi is usually slow satellite or a shared mobile connection.
- Hurghada, El Gouna, Sharm el-Sheikh, Dahab — strong in the resort areas and along the coast road.
- The Western Desert, Siwa and Mount Sinai — expect real gaps. Bring offline maps and tell someone your plan.
On a Nile cruise, download your reading, maps and anything you need to check before you board. Treat onboard Wi-Fi as a bonus, not a service.
Calling apps in Egypt
Voice and video calling over apps such as WhatsApp has at times been restricted on Egyptian networks. Messaging itself generally works. As in the UAE, this is a network-level decision that applies to hotel Wi-Fi and travel eSIMs equally — no particular SIM avoids it. Plan to message rather than call, and use your home line if you need a guaranteed voice call.
