Short answer: 3–5 GB covers a normal week in Dubai. Coverage is world-class almost everywhere, including the Metro and the desert highways. The one thing to know before you go has nothing to do with which SIM you buy: voice and video calls over WhatsApp, FaceTime and similar apps are restricted on UAE networks, and that applies to hotel Wi-Fi and travel eSIMs alike.
The VoIP restriction, in plain terms
The UAE regulates internet calling. In practice that means WhatsApp, FaceTime, Messenger and similar apps typically work for messages, photos and voice notes but not for live voice or video calls while you are connected through a UAE network.
What this means for you:
- A travel eSIM does not change it. Neither does a local Etisalat or du SIM, or the hotel Wi-Fi.
- Text and media messaging work normally. So does everything else — maps, email, banking, streaming, social media.
- Locally licensed calling apps such as Botim are the sanctioned alternative and are widely used by residents and visitors.
- Your home line still makes ordinary phone calls, at your carrier's international roaming rate, if you enable it.
Anyone advertising an eSIM as a way around this is selling you something that is not theirs to sell.
How much data do you need?
- Maps, messaging, bookings — 1–2 GB a week.
- Normal trip — 3–5 GB a week.
- Working, or posting video from the Burj daily — 10 GB and up.
Hotel, mall and café Wi-Fi in the UAE is excellent and everywhere, which keeps real usage low.
Coverage
Etisalat (e&) and du both run very strong networks. The UAE has among the best 5G availability in the world.
- Dubai and Abu Dhabi — dense 5G, including the Metro, the malls, the airport and the top of the Burj Khalifa.
- Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah — strong throughout.
- Desert safari areas and the dunes — good near the main roads and at the camps; thin in the deeper dunes.
- Hatta and the mountains — reliable in town, patchy on the passes.
- Between emirates — the highways are fully covered.
Setting up
- Confirm eSIM support and that your handset is unlocked. Check your device
- Install at home on Wi-Fi, leaving the line off.
- On arrival at DXB, DWC or AUH, turn the eSIM line on with data roaming enabled for that line only.
- Turn mobile data off on the home line.

Stopping over versus staying
Dubai is as often a 12-hour layover as a holiday. For a stopover, the smallest available plan is usually right: you need maps, a ride to the hotel and messaging, not 10 GB.
